What treatment options are available for non-primarily resectable, metastatic NETs?
If a neuroendocrine tumor (NET) has already metastasized or cannot be completely removed due to its location, various systemic therapies are available.
A key component is the use of somatostatin analogs. These inhibit hormone production and can slow down tumor growth. If the disease progresses further, targeted drugs or a so-called peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) can be used, which binds radioactive substances directly to the tumor cells.
Treatment depends on the type of tumor, its growth pattern, and the hormone status. Although metastatic NETs are often not curable, the life expectancy is often significantly longer than with other metastatic tumors – some patients live for many years with a good quality of life
