What options does systemic therapy offer for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)?
If liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma, HCC) cannot be operated on or treated locally, systemic therapies are used. These are drugs that act throughout the body. These treatments have advanced significantly in recent years. In the past, tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as sorafenib or lenvatinib, which slow tumor growth, were primarily used. Today, immunotherapies are playing an increasingly important role and are often used instead of or in combination with these drugs. In later stages of treatment, additional targeted therapies or immunotherapies may follow.
particularly important for successful treatment are:
- Accompanying therapy for liver cirrhosis
- Effective pain management
- An appropriate diet
- Care in a specialized tumor center/network
Thanks to medical advances, many patients today live longer with a good quality of life—and this is precisely the goal we pursue at GITZ.
