Was bedeutet ein resektables oder lokal fortgeschrittenes Pankreaskarzinom?

Pancreatic carcinoma (pancreatic cancer) is one of the most aggressive tumors of the digestive system. If the tumor is confined to the pancreas and there are no distant metastases, it is referred to as resectable (operable) or locally advanced.

In Switzerland, around 1,000 people fall ill every year. The symptoms are non-specific:

  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Jaundice
  • Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite
  • Type II diabetes mellitus

The goal of treatment is complete surgical removal. Chemotherapy is usually performed before or after surgery to prevent recurrence. In locally advanced but non-metastatic tumors, a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy can shrink the tumor and allow for surgery at a later date.

The prognosis is sometimes sobering, but modern treatment concepts, early detection, and specialized surgical procedures have improved the chances of recovery. At GITZ, we have several patients who have made a full recovery—their portrait videos will be available shortly.
